Vapor Trail

A vapor trail of prayers
floats out behind us,
behind this plane,

streaming back,
at first invisible,
from the mouth of an old and tiny black woman

in the seat across the aisle.
She's shifting and twitching
in folds of brilliant African cloth

and a blue veil,
muttering supplications,
clicking her beads.
