At New Year's
(An Unpublished Essay by Justin Rood)

In the loud downpour of colored stars,
in tiny bubbles swirling and whispering
through pale champagne and music,
may yet come that elusive moment --
invisible, silent -- in which you can
still believe completely in yourself,
in which you see your flaws retreat
before valiant, unyielding resolutions
you have rallied on foolscap all week
and armored in optimism buffed by
a thousand busy hopes -- a moment
when all your possibilities are again
your own, to squander, to cherish, maybe
even to realize, in the long year ahead.
